NFPA 72 Installation & Design Requirements: Heights, Distances, Spacing, and Quantities

Quick Reference Table

Device Type Requirement Typical Value NFPA 72 Section
Smoke Detector Max spacing 9.1 m (30 ft) 17.7.3.2.3
Smoke Detector Max distance from wall 4.6 m (15 ft) 17.7.3.2.3
Heat Detector Mounting distance from wall 100–300 mm (4–12 in.) 17.6.3
Manual Call Point Mounting height 1.07–1.37 m (42–54 in.) 17.15
Visual Strobe Mounting height 2.03–2.44 m (80–96 in.) 18.5.5.1
Audible Appliance Max sound level 110 dBA 18.4.1.2
MCP Spacing Max travel distance 60 m (200 ft) 17.15

1. Smoke Detector Spacing and Mounting

Detectors shall be installed on the ceiling or on the wall within 300 mm (12 in.) of the ceiling.
The maximum spacing between detectors shall not exceed 9.1 m (30 ft), with the first detector within
4.6 m (15 ft) of any wall. For sloped ceilings less than 30°, spacing is based on the height at the peak.
[NFPA 72, Section 17.7.3.2]

2. Heat Detector Installation

Ceiling-mounted detectors: at least 100 mm (4 in.) from walls. Wall-mounted detectors: between
100 mm and 300 mm (4–12 in.) from the ceiling. Maximum spacing is defined by the detector’s listed coverage,
commonly up to 50 ft (15 m) on smooth ceilings. For beam/joist construction, spacing may need to be reduced up to
50% at right angles to beams.
[NFPA 72, Section 17.6.3]

3. Manual Call Points (Manual Fire Alarm Boxes)

Install at 1.07–1.37 m (42–54 in.) above finished floor; place within 1.5 m (5 ft) of each exit doorway;
maximum travel distance to a manual box typically 60 m (200 ft) depending on local code adoption.
[NFPA 72, Section 17.15]

4. Notification Appliances (Audible & Visual)

Audible Devices

Design levels must meet the applicable public/private/sleeping area criteria and shall not exceed
110 dBA at the minimum hearing distance; where ambient exceeds 105 dBA, provide visual appliances.
[NFPA 72, Section 18.4]

Visual Devices (Strobes)

Wall-mounted lens center between 2.03 m and 2.44 m (80–96 in.). For low ceilings, mount within
150 mm (6 in.) of the ceiling and adjust coverage per Table 18.5.5.5.1. A 15 cd strobe typically covers
20 ft × 20 ft in rooms when applied per the table.
[NFPA 72, Section 18.5]

5. System Design Considerations

Ensure coverage so no point on the ceiling is beyond allowable spacing; provide remote indicators for concealed/inaccessible
detectors where required; and install all devices in accordance with listings and manufacturer instructions.
[NFPA 72, Sections 17.4.6, 17.7, 18.3, 23.8.5]

6. Carbon Monoxide & Combined Detection

CO detection follows specific chapters; combination devices shall comply with their respective product standards and code
sections (e.g., Chapter 29 for dwelling units).
